Goal – Pitch yourself as an interview guest on key podcasts to gain exposure and promote your own podcast, products, services or books, while meeting potential clients and referral partners.

Start with the Right Podcasts

Step 1: Hire an overseas virtual assistant to build a list of podcasts in your target genre, looking by these methods in order:

  1. iTunes category search
  2. iTunes keyword searches
  3. “Best of” or “Top 10 Podcasts in _____”  – lists put out by blogs and online magazines
  4. Straight Google search
  5. Specific podcast host searches – Stitcher, Podbean, Soundcloud, etc.

(You or your assistant can also do this if you’ve never hired overseas staff before)

Once this is completed, you’ll have a list of what I call “raw research.”

Take that raw research and prioritize podcasts that are the most credible before moving to the next step. First eliminate any podcast that has a pretty clear message-to-market mismatch.

Credibility Indicators for a Podcast

  1. # of reviews on iTunes
  2. Social media following (YouTube subscribers, Facebook likes, Instagram followers, etc.)
  3. Quality of website
  4. Quality of guests – this one takes getting a feel for the industry
  5. Podcast Host is also an author with a legitimate book available on Amazon
  6. Podcast Host is well-connected on LinkedIn (500+)

Find the Right Contact Information

Step 2: Research contact info for podcast host or staff member who handles booking requests.

Our favorite tools for email research include Rapportive and Prophet, both available as Chrome plug-ins. You can also hire this out easily on Fiverr.

Build the Right Approach

Step 3: Research the podcast host to understand what you bring to the table for them

Look for 4 things:

Connection

Look for common connections such as mutual friends on social media, affinity groups, followers of the same thought leaders, mutual interview guests, anything that builds a sense of connection with the host. Key Question: What connection do we have in common that will catch their attention and interest them enough to read past the 1st line of my email?

Need

Look for evidence that they need quality guests in your area of expertise. Key Question: Do they have a track record of past interviews with experts like you, or an audience of people you can speak to?

Goals

Understand why the podcast host runs their show. Promoting their own coaching, speaking, consulting, product or service, etc. Key Question: What’s in it for them to interview you?

Recording Method

Look for details on how the show is broadcast or recorded. Key Question: Do you have evidence that you have done prior interviews in that format to demonstrate your credibility as a guest?

Make the Right First Impression

Step 5: Send a Simple Reach Out Email

Customize the template email below, especially the 1st two lines.

You’ll want to use your research to make these 2 lines extremely relevant to that host so they know you’ve done your homework and are reaching out to them personally.

You also have the option of hiring a PR firm, or hiring an outside assistant or even a VA you label as a “PR Manager” works great.

There are templates below for both circumstances and multiple reach-out reasons.

Hi NAME,

Came across your podcast, really enjoyed the episode with _____, that was a great interview!

[something specific and complementary here about their podcast, business or a specific episode]

Wanted to reach out personally because I might actually be a good guest for you.

I’m a speaker/consultant/author/whatever, and really enjoyed an interview on the _______ podcast recently and got some great feedback from the host.

One of my favorite topics is ________ , which I thought aligned really well with your show and your audience.

I’d love to connect, learn more about your show and your ideal guest.

At the very least there are probably a couple other folks in my network who would be ideal guests, and I’m happy to make a couple introductions.

Just let me know if you’re open to the idea!

Thanks!
