“You don’t have to be relentless about everything, you don’t have to be the best at everything. You can’t be unstoppable in your career and your relationships and your other interests, because achieving excellence in any of those areas requires you to say, “I don’t give a damn about anything else.” Tim Grover
I’ve been thinking a lot about clarity lately because of all the opportunities that have come up in business.
I’m opportunistic by nature, so this feels like a good thing but ultimately it can be a trap.
Excellence doesn’t come from chasing every opportunity.
Musicians are a great example.
Some of the best drummers in the world are so musically talented that other instruments like piano, bass or guitar come easy to them.
But at some point, all the great drummers made a decision.
They had enough clarity and self-awareness to realize that drums were their first love.
They set aside those other instruments to focus on the drums.
They took massive action and practiced relentlessly to be the best drummer possible.
I haven’t quite reached it yet, but I feel like I’m getting closer to that level of clarity and self-awareness.
